The beautiful St. Johannis (St. John the Evangelist) church overlooks the river Elbe and is one of the dominant buildings of Magdeburg. It has a history of almost 1000 years, was important for the Reformation, part of the Prussian semaphore system and is the burial place of Otto von Guericke, the 17th century scientist who invented the vacuum pump, and who was also an important local politician and town major. The building has seen several wartime destructions and reconstructions and is now, recently renovated, a nice venue as ballroom, for concerts and conferences.
